you can do anything you set your mind to, man...

Currently I am up to 8 mile "Long Slow Distance" runs interspersed with weekly speedwork at the local high school track. So I’m wondering if it is a realistic expectation that I could finish, barring any injuries, a half-marathon by maybe say...October?

Definitely do-able Joe! I think so if you follow a training plan. The longest run I had done was 7 miles before I started training for my half. I gave myself 4 months to train, which turned out to be enough for me. How long have you been running? How many miles a week do you currently run?

I've been putting in a consistent 20 to 25 miles a week for about 4 months or so now and before that I (before I got really down and serious about my fitness that is!) had been walking/bicycling on and off for about the last ten years.

If you are able to run 8 miles for your long run now, then you are more than ready and can definitely finish a half-marathon in October! And given the running background you have described, I think you'll be in great shape to run it well.

Thanks for the encouraging words! But first things first –I have my very first (!) 10k on the 17th and I am getting veeeery nervous...

Just get out there and run, Joe. Relax and remember when you’re on that line that you belong there. You’re one of us, you know.

You’re a runner.

I have not one ounce of a doubt that you can do this. Next year, you will do a full marathon. I know you can do it. You are ready!

I second Kelly's comment, mate.  I have do doubts at all.  Run, Joe, run...

I really hope your family appreciates what an accomplishment all this running is...I did my running on the front end of life, up until about 6 years ago...and now it HURTS.  My knees just are done with running, but occasionally I force it on them..but they get even.

You can do this, and I hope you'll post about it when its done.

I signed up for the Virginia Beach Rock & Roll Half-Marathon (August 31st) to have a goal to work towards. Just shoot me now.

You're a real inspiration Roy!

Joe, you can do it!

Me on the other hand, I can barely handle this new g-ddamned JU version.

I absolutely hate it!  Someone help me!

I'll keep at it if you will too. - Moskowitz

I was gonna fourth Kelly's comment but can you fourth something?  I don't think you can so I will second SaxyGirl and Buddah's comments because you are a real inspiration and you can do it.

I have my very first(!) 10k on the 17th and I am getting veeeery nervous...

Nothing wrong with being nervous just remember you're not running against other racers. You are running against yourself. Don't even worry about anyone else just run your own race. I have faith in you look how far you come so far.

Thanks Kelly, Maso, and Zoo! I appreciate your faith in me and in what I'm trying to do.

Tova: eh...those knees! I worry about mine! They pop and crunch and go on but everyone tells me this is normal (especially for someone who is 47  ) and so far so good.

I signed up for the Virginia Beach Rock & Roll Half-Marathon (August 31st) to have a goal to work towards. Just shoot me now.

Here I am feeling confident on entering a 100 mile bike thing WWW Link in August but the thought of running 13.1 miles worries me! Weird.   Keep me informed on your progress and how you do 'cause I NEED inspiration too!

You are running against yourself.

Heh, now that I think about it UDig, it's always kinda been that way. Thanks for the words of encouragement!

Oops! Sorry Buddah, I missed you there!

I'll keep at it if you will too.

You got yourself a DEAL!

Welcome back, bro.
